WSJ - Venture Firms’ Newest Role: Recruiter

Michael Ovitz and his influence on the structure of Silicon Valley VC firm Andreessen Horowitz is touched upon in this article, Venture Firms' Newest Role: Recruiter, appearing in today's Wall Street Journal:

"Over the last two years, venture firm Andreessen Horowitz has built a talent database of more than 5,000 engineers, designers and product managers, and launched its own college recruiting program covering 12 schools across America. The idea is to copy the Hollywood talent agency model pioneered by Michael Ovitz at Creative Artists Agency, and the firm’s co-founders have said they borrowed many ideas from Ovitz on how to build a high-quality service firm."

This reflects a growing trend in Silicon valley for entrepreneurs to tap venture backers not only for cash, but for other services vital to a nascent business:  recruiting help, marketing, business development, customer contacts, and so forth.

  1. Angels' realm: a potential hit movie. Logline: a human lost his love; he couldn't fight it, so he seeks help both from humans and elemental beings only to achieve a pryrrhic victory. http://emenry.livejournal.com
